Engine repairs

Engine work from oil leaks and cooling faults to cylinder heads and timing components — inspected first, talked through with you, and quoted once we know what has actually failed.

Sound familiar? Blue, white or black smoke from the exhaust.

Signs you might notice

If any of these describes your vehicle, this is the page for it.

  • Blue, white or black smoke from the exhaust.

  • Overheating, or coolant disappearing with no visible leak.

  • Knocking, tapping or rattling that changes with engine speed.

  • Oil on the driveway, or an oil level that keeps dropping between services.

  • A loss of power, or the engine cutting out and then being hard to restart.

What the work covers

  • Inspection and testing to establish what has failed before any work is agreed.
  • Oil and coolant leak repairs.
  • Cooling system work — thermostats, pumps, hoses and radiators.
  • Cylinder head and head gasket work.
  • Timing component replacement.
  • Engine replacement, where the existing engine is not worth repairing — discussed with you, and priced, before anything is ordered.
  • Anything further found during the repair, discussed with you before it is carried out.

How it works

  1. Call us or send an enquiry describing what the engine is doing and when it started.

  2. We inspect the vehicle and test to establish the cause rather than the symptom.

  3. We talk you through what we found, what putting it right involves, and what it would come to.

  4. The work is carried out once you have agreed it, and we come back to you if anything changes.

  5. If the sensible answer is that the repair is worth more than the vehicle, you get that answer rather than an invoice.

Why choose AutoTech Garage?

What you can hold us to on this job.

  • We agree the work with you first

We explain what we have found and what putting it right involves, and nothing beyond what you have agreed is carried out without a telephone call first.

  • One independent workshop in Bournemouth

Routine servicing and major mechanical work are both done here, by the same garage, so you are not passed on when a job turns out to be a large one.

Common questions

  • Can you tell me what it will come to over the telephone?
Not honestly. Engine work depends on what has failed and on what is found once the engine is opened up, so we look at the vehicle first and price it when we know. What you get then is an estimate rather than a fixed price, and the difference is not a technicality: if the strip-down changes the picture, we stop and come back to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill. Nothing is carried out until you have been told what it will come to and have agreed to it. What we can do on the telephone is talk through the symptoms and tell you which of them usually turn out to be small and which do not.
  • What happens to the car while you work out what has failed?
It stays here. An engine fault is found by testing it under load and by taking things apart in an order, and neither of those is a five-minute job on the forecourt — so the vehicle is with us from the point you leave it until we have talked you through what we found. We telephone you at that point rather than at the end, because that is the point at which you have a decision to make.
  • Is it worth repairing an older vehicle?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. We will tell you what the repair involves and what else is likely to need attention before long, so the decision is yours with the full picture in front of you.
  • Do you fit new or used parts?
It depends on the part and on what you would prefer. We set out the options that are sensible for your vehicle and you choose between them.
